Bianca Taylor – Fitness coach and Social media influencer

Vegan for the animals, & the booty gains

Vegan Fitness Q&A

http://www.biancataylorfitness.com

Vegspiration Tent – 4:15 PM to 5:05 PM

My name is Bianca Taylor, and I am a certified personal trainer, also certified in plant-based nutrition. I went vegan in 2014, after competing in back to back bikini bodybuilding competitions and struggling with anorexia.

Growing up I was a competitive dancer and often struggled with my body image. I’ve always had a curvy structure and would feel insecure about my body because of the constant push from the media to be thin. I wad self-conscious about my hips and thighs and lack of abdominal muscles.

When I was 19 I decided to start weightlifting and eating healthier. My first trainer put me on a basic “chicken and broccoli” style diet and showed me my way around the weight room. I still wasn’t getting the results I desired, so I decided to prep for a bikini competition. I thought the strict structure and timeline would push me to take my body to the next level. I ended up on a low-carb diet for months, all through my bikini competition prep. After weeks of low carb dieting, I would compete in my bikini competition with a super low body fat percentage. As soon as I would step off stage, I would binge on fast food, sweets, and everything that I had restricted myself from for weeks. The binge would physically make me sick and next day I would feel extremely guilty and go back to my very strict low-carb diet, that left me hungry, unhappy, and unenergized. This unhealthy cycle of starve and binge became routine for me and warped my concept of food more and more. My weight fluctuated throughout the bikini prep seasons, and I didn’t have any idea how to have a healthy and fit lifestyle that I could maintain year round.

I thought that the only way to be lean and fit was to eliminate carbs, since that is what the diet and fitness industry advertises.

After competing in my last bikini competition, I fell into a deep depression and struggled to have any type of normal relationship with food. I was down to nearly 100 lbs, where as my normal weight was around 125-130 lbs. I had lost a lot of muscle mass that I had worked so hard for. I was terrified of carbs and fats, and stuck to eating a minuscule amount of chicken and veggies.

One day while cooking chicken, I looked down at my puppy and had a realization that changed my life. I suddenly lost my appetite and began researching a plant-based diet. I was shocked by all of the information I can across about the agriculture industry. I went vegan that day and decided to dive into learning about plant-based nutrition. I learned that carbs weren’t the enemy, and that you can have a delicious and flexible lifestyle while working towards your goals.

I studied plant-based nutrition via eCornell alongside personal training from ISSA, so that I could help other people who wanted to have a healthy, vegan lifestyle and get fit. Over the past few years, I had trained with and alongside Olympians and professional bodybuilders, professional mixed martial artists, and other specialists that have also taught various train methods.

Since going vegan, I have gained much muscle and healed my relationship with food. I no longer stress over carbs but rather utilize them to fuel workouts. I spend my energy helping others and promoting something I am so passionate about. I never thought that plant-based diet would allow me to overcome anorexia, but it did. It’s made me stronger and healthier than ever, and taught me REAL nutrition.

I did have to unlearn what I thought I knew about dieting for fitness, but 4 years later, I can gladly say it has been the best decision of my life.

The best seller Fit for Life by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond initiated her journey towards self-healing. Her passion lies in inspiring and exposing individuals who may not otherwise be acquainted with healthier lifestyles due to environmental and economic barriers or the simple lack of knowledge.

Becoming a self taught chemist in the kitchen perfecting healthy foods that taste out of this world allowed her to eat and enjoy the meals she loved without the guilt or associated “diseases” or ailments.

Initially becoming a Sunday food vendor at the City of Angels Church and Agape Spiritual Center, Chef Babette opened her own restaurant in the heart of downtown Inglewood, California. Opened in 2008, Stuff I Eat, brings much needed healthy soul food to a community that lacked such a culinary jewel.

Chef Babette shares an array of raw and cooked recipes including Inspirational Messages and Chef B’s Delectable Delights. Continuing to spread the word of Chef B’s Delectable Delights, she is hard at work on her first book, Cash In On Cashews, the first book in her Crave Series, which focuses on the versatility of the amazing cashew nut.

Fueling her body with the nutrients to allow her to continue the active lifestyle and body she proudly displays at the age of 66. It is her passion to help other embrace health and start today no matter how old you are.

Chef B’s motto “Life is not complete unless you move. Our journeys are constant and our transitions are infinite, our health is merely a vehicle to enjoy all that’s in between.”

Cashing in on Cashews, a dessert book is the first in series of a four part series that will launch this summer.

Sister band with four-part harmonies

http://www.dardensisters.com

Main Stage – 1:15 PM to 1:55 PM

Four sisters, four-part vocal harmonies, ten musical instruments (and growing) and four prolific songwriters all adds up to – DARDEN! Selah (20), Clarah (19), Havilah (17), and Tabithah (16). Darden is an alternative vocal group from Fullerton, California. As four of six children, the girls began singing at an early age, traveling in an RV across America with their parents.

Soon, the girls began seeking out their own opportunities to develop their talents as singers, songwriters, and musicians. Selah plays the violin and piano. Clarah plays acoustic guitar, bass, piano, and ukulele. Havilah plays guitar, mandolin, and ukulele. Tabithah, the youngest, plays the up-right bass, acoustic bass, electric bass, and ukulele.

Most recently they have honed their vocal style which reflects their influences – a hybrid of Folk, Americana, Pop, Country, and Blue Grass, creating a distinctive original sound dubbed Alternative Americana. With a vocal style reminiscent of The Eagles and the crossover potential of bands like Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, and the The Zac Brown Band, Darden is carving their own lane through the current musical landscape. Their musical statement, built on a foundation of great songs, a down to earth image, and musical talent well beyond their years, is a refreshing antidote to today’s music scene.
The Darden sisters are developing into prolific songwriters with sensitive and thought- provoking lyrics and strong melodies that float through effortless harmonies. The Darden journey is not about fortune or fame, but rather about sharing their love of music.

Highly respected for his musicianship, Dj, Trumpeter, and producer, Translucent began in the Midwest’s, vibrant warehouse scene. Although House, Techno, and Jazz have been his guide, his work shows an unconstrained freedom towards music. This modus operandi led him to be one of the innovators of adding live instrumentation while Djing, and being the originator of adding the trumpet to this format.

A full ride Jazz scholarship, brought Translucent to Chicago, where he soon after began Djing, and producing with two turntables, an MPC 2000, and a Martin Committee trumpet. His talent landed him in the studio with pioneering producers Derrick Carter, Glenn Underground, Paul Johnson, which intern, set him on a course spinning world wide.

Staying true to form, his floor moving DJ sets, are never planned out and often infused with improvised trumpet, creating a unique juxtaposition in an original space. Like his Dj sets, his approach to music production, playing the trumpet, and practice sessions all have the same goal he says, “I try and stay fully aware of the moment, while getting completely lost in the feeling”.

Translucent’s unique stylings can be heard on Kompakt, Nervous, and Petfood records. He’s featured on Ultra Majic and has played trumpet on Classic, Hot Creations, and Guidance recordings.

Living the Farm Sanctuary Life

http://www.farmsanctuary.org/living

– 3:30 PM to 3:45 PM

Vegspiration Tent – 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. Since the mid-1980s, he has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our system of cheap food production.

A pioneer in the field of undercover investigations, Gene has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting the deplorable conditions that exist. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals.

Gene has also testified in courts and before local, state, and federal legislative bodies, advocating for better conditions for farm animals. His most important achievements include winning the first-ever cruelty conviction at a U.S. stockyard and introducing the first U.S. laws to prohibit cruel farming confinement methods in Florida, Arizona, and California. His efforts have been covered by top news organizations, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, andThe Wall Street Journal. Gene has published two bestsellers, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food (Scribner, 2008) and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life (Rodale, 2015), which he co-authored with Forks Over Knives author Gene Stone. Through his writing and his international speaking engagements, Gene provides simple actionable solutions coupled with a compassion-first approach to help us be the change we wish to see in treatment toward animals and in our food system.

Gene began his activist career selling veggie hotdogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts to fund farm animal rescues. Today, he serves as president of Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, with shelters in New York and California. Providing rescue, refuge, and adoption for hundreds of farm animals each year, Farm Sanctuary shelters enable visitors to connect with farm animals as emotional, intelligent individuals. Gene believes these animals stand as ambassadors for the billions of factory farm animals who have no voice, and he has dedicated his career to advocating on their behalf.

Gene holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Northridge, and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University. In 2015, Gene was granted an Associate appointment in Health, Behavior, and Society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In this prestigious position, Gene is focused on implementing courses related to evidence-based work on diet and farming as it aligns to Farm Sanctuary’s goals of shedding light on factory farming’s threat to public health, the environment and animal welfare.

A pioneer in the field of undercover investigations and farm animal rescue, Gene has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting the deplorable conditions. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals, and his rescue work inspired an international farm sanctuary movement.

His efforts have been covered by top news organizations, including The New York TimesLos Angeles TimesChicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. Gene has published two bestsellers, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food (Scribner, 2008) and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life (Rodale, 2015), which he co-authored with Forks Over Knives author Gene Stone. Through his writing and his international speaking engagements, Gene provides simple, actionable solutions coupled with a compassion-first approach to help us be the change we wish to see in the treatment of animals and our food system.

Gene began his activist career selling veggie hot dogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts to fund farm animal rescues. In 2015, Gene was granted a faculty appointment in Health, Behavior, and Society at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He was recently named one of Oprah Winfrey’s SuperSoul 100 Givers.

GIDON

Reggae Soul Groove

http://gidonmusic.com

Main Stage – 3:55 PM to 4:45 PM

Gidon is fast emerging as one of the brightest new stars on the international reggae circuit. With roots in Israel and the Netherlands, and raised on the sun-kissed coast of Southern California, Gidon’s high-vibe music reflects the diverse, cross-cultural influences that defined his early years. Fusing elements of rock, jazz, soul and old-school Roots Rock Reggae, Gidon creates a sunny, groove-filled sound that is every bit as soulful as the Jamaican legends who inspired him.

After a decade spent playing the clubs of Los Angeles, London and Miami, Gidon’s lush, golden vocals and talent for writing future hits caught the attention of legendary reggae singer Beres Hammond. Gidon spent a week jamming with Hammond in his Miami hotel room, before the ‘King of Lover’s Rock Reggae’ sent him to the island of Jamaica to record his first full-length album with an all-star line-up of the most legendary names in the business.

This gifted musician and singer is equally at home playing sax as he is on guitar, percussion, drums or bass. Gidon recently spent time in Jamaica recording with the high priests of reggae themselves in their legendary Kingston studios. Beres Hammond at Harmony House; legendary rhythm duo Sly & Robbie at Anchor Studio; Clive Hunt at House of Hits. Gidon cut his first single, “Call Me,” which got daily air play on MELLOW FM and IRIE FM, Jamaica’s and the World’s number one radio station. His latest EP release “Rise” (Sept. 2016) has been played on David Rodigan’s BBC 1 radio Xtra and Dennis Bovell’s “Dub on Air” program on SOHO Radio, as well as local L.A. legend Chuck Foster’s “Reggae Central” radio show.

Gidon – Hebrew for Gideon – played the Ostroda Reggae Festival alongside Stephen Marley, Sly & Robbie and Katchafire in 2011; won the Carbondale, Colorado 2012 Mountain Fair Songwriters Competition; and opened the 2013 “Reggae to Reggae” show in Portland, Jamaica.

Ingrid Newkirk – PETA president and co-founder

We are all animals

We are all animals!

https://www.peta.org/

Vegspiration Tent – 2:15 PM to 3:10 PM

PETA president and cofounder Ingrid Newkirk has led the world’s largest animal rights organization for more than 35 years. Her passion and dedication to making this world a better place for all living beings has inspired countless others to do what they can to help animals.

As PETA’s president, Ingrid has spoken internationally on animal rights issues—from the steps of the Canadian Parliament to the streets of New Delhi, India, and from the drowning tanks of Taiwan to the halls of the U.S. Congress.

Ingrid was born in Surrey, England, and lived in Europe until she was 7 years old, when she and her parents moved to New Delhi, where her father worked as a navigational engineer and her mother volunteered for Mother Teresa and various charities. Ingrid’s early volunteer experiences—packing pills and rolling bandages for people who were suffering from leprosy, stuffing toys for orphans, and feeding stray animals—informed her view that anyone in need, including animals, is worthy of concern.

Until she was 21, Ingrid had given no thought to animal rights or even vegetarianism. In 1970, however, when she and her husband were living in Maryland and she was studying to become a stockbroker, a neighbor abandoned some kittens and Ingrid decided to take them to an animal shelter. This was a life changing-experience for Ingrid and led to her first job working in behalf of animals—cleaning kennels and investigating cruelty cases. Peter Singer’s book Animal Liberation and Ingrid’s experiences in that job and later on—including finding a fox and a squirrel caught in steel traps, finding a pig left to starve on a farm, and inspecting laboratories and circus acts for the government—made her realize that there needed to be an organization like PETA.

Ingrid has also served as a deputy sheriff, a Maryland state law enforcement officer with the highest success rate in convicting animal abusers, the director of cruelty investigations for the second-oldest humane society in the U.S., and the chief of animal disease control for the Commission on Public Health in Washington, D.C.

Under Ingrid’s leadership, legislation was passed to create the first-ever spay-and-neuter clinic in Washington, D.C. She coordinated the first arrest in U.S. history of a laboratory animal experimenter on cruelty charges and helped achieve the first anti-cruelty law in Taiwan. She spearheaded the closure of a Department of Defense underground “wound laboratory,” and she has initiated many other campaigns against animal abuse, including ending General Motors’ car-crash tests on animals.

Since it was founded, PETA has exposed horrific animal abuse in laboratories, leading to many firsts, including canceled funding, closed facilities, seizure of animals, and charges filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PETA has also closed the largest horse-slaughter operation in North America, convinced dozens of major designers and hundreds of companies to stop using fur, ended all car-crash tests on animals, cleaned up wretched animal pounds, helped schools switch to alternatives to dissection, and provided millions of people with information on vegetarianism, companion animal care, and countless other issues.

Ingrid Newkirk’s biography shows that she is an abolitionist who remains committed to the idea that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.

Jayde Nicole is a vegan, environmentalist and animal activist.

Jayde seeks to educate people on the seriousness of protecting our environment, our oceans and the animals we share this planet with. She participates in and organizes beach & ocean clean ups, volunteers at the marine mammal care center, and educates people on how to reduce their impact on our environment through social media.

Jayde created her dog rescue, EDL Foundation in 2013 but her love of all animals has been with her for her entire life. At the age of five she informed her mother in a way only a five year old can do, that she would no longer be eating meat, and so began her path to help as many animals as she could. Her move from small-town Port Perry, Ontario to Los Angeles, California, which is overwhelmed with dog shelters, helped to focus her efforts towards helping dogs. EDL seeks to educate people on pet population control, animal adoption, and proper care. They rescue dogs abandoned and neglected at kill shelters as well as homeless and displaced  pets. EDL rehabilitates these dogs and then helps find them their forever homes.

A proud native of Brooklyn, New York, John found a love for basketball at an early age. He accepted a Basketball Scholarship to Georgia Tech to play for legendary head coach Bobby Cremins. From there Salley went on to become a 15-year NBA veteran and was the first NBA player to win four championships with three different teams. During the 80’s, Salley was a member of the Detroit Piston “Bad Boys” squad. Salley went on to Chicago playing with Michael Jordan as part of the Bulls 1996 championship team. In 1999, Phil Jackson invited Salley to come to Los Angeles to provide experience and leadership to the 1999-2000 Lakers’ championship team.

After his retirement from the NBA in 2000, Salley explored several opportunities in both television and film. John’s film credits include Bad Boys 1 & 2, Eddie and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Confession of a Shopaholic. John has served as host for numerous award shows and was also the host of The John Salley Block Party on 100.3 The Beat Morning Show in Los Angeles. John recently hosted the Reunion Shows of VH-1’s #1 rated show, Basketball Wives.

John spent 7 years serving as the co-host of the Emmy nominated, critically acclaimed “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” on Fox Sports Net. He was also the host of the sports talk show “Ballers” on BET. John is the head of his own production company, John Salley Presents, Inc., where he uses his uncanny ability to find unique and interesting people and projects for television, film and Internet. In April 2011 until recently, John hosted his own talk show Game On! airing on The Reelz Channel. In addition, John was also a co-host on The Car Show, airing on Speed Channel. John has also been the MC for numerous Corporate and Charity events.

John is actively involved with Operation Smile, PETA and the fight against Diabetes. In addition, John is involved with PCRM and visited Washington speaking to Congress about the Child Nutrition Act, asking Members to support legislation that would increase vegetarian options in meals served in public schools.

John has adopted a plant based (raw vegan) lifestyle, and is a frequent speaker at VegFest’s across the USA. As a Wellness and Health Coach, one of John’s main missions in life is to continue to educate people on the benefits of living a healthier lifestyle thru better eating habits. With a passion for real food, wine and spirits, John is a partner in the label “Vegan Vine” in partnership with Clos LaChance Winery. John has contributed articles to Wine Spectator, Cigar Aficionado and LA Confidential. You can follow John on Facebook John Salley, Twitter @thejohnsalley.com and his website, www.johnsalley.com. Mind Body Space – 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

With 15 years of dedicated practice, Mary has embodied the true meaning of yoga; the unification of mind, body, and spirit. When she realized that the physical asana practice was a mere scratching of the surface of what the practice has to offer, her life began to change in ways she could have never imagined. As she dove passionately into herself, she began to flourish and expand. The teaching brought her to Los Angeles, where she tapped into what she considers to be an extension of her practice, surfing. Her deep love for the ocean and the sport lead her to create a ocean conservation, non-profit organisation, Daana Blue. Through this organisation she is living yoga, being of service to the Earth, community, and our underprivileged youth.

It has been Mary’s honor to teach children, the elderly, women’s groups, surfers, at festivals, retreats, on the beach (her second home), events, online, for corporations, in numerous studios, as well as privately. She has also been featured on Girl Central Television, twice on Yoga Audacious, Exceed Evolution, is a speaker on the Skillify panel, and has partnered with LA Unified School District, the Educare Foundation, and Beyond the Bell.

Her students are of all body types, levels of fitness and practice, demographic, and age ranging from 4-81. Styles of yoga Mary specializes in are Vinyasa, Hatha, and Restorative, all primarily focused on hands-on and verbal alignment cues as well as meditation. She has chosen to dedicate her life to teaching yoga because it has liberated her and brought her to self-realization. It is the fulfillment of her heart to inspire other to do the same through a life of mindfulness, love, inner-peace and generosity.

With numerous trainings done in India in the Raja Yoga tradition, studying under Usha Devi direct disciple of BKS Iyangar, Mary has an insatiable appetite for continuing her education. She continues self study of the 8 limbs of yoga and anatomy/physiology and welcomes her student to join her on her journey of personal growth and soul expansion. Nathan Runkle – President, Mercy For Animals

The Future is Vegan

Animal Power Hour – Eating with Kindness

http://www.mercyforanimals.org

– 12:10 PM
– 12:40 PM to 1:40 PM

Nathan Runkle is the founder and president of Mercy For Animals. Raised on a farm in rural Ohio, Nathan has long had a deep connection with farmed animals. After a local farmed animal abuse case involving a piglet slammed headfirst into a concrete floor during an agricultural project at a nearby high school, Nathan founded MFA to give “food” animals a much-needed advocate in his local community.

Since founding MFA over a decade ago, Nathan has overseen the organization’s growth into a leading national force in the prevention of cruelty to farmed animals and promotion of compassionate food choices and policies.

A nationally recognized speaker on animal advocacy, factory farming, and veganism, Nathan has presented at colleges, conferences, and many other forums from coast to coast.

Through his work with MFA, Nathan has been an outspoken advocate for animal rights, featured in hundreds of television, radio, and newspaper interviews, including on ABC’s World News Tonight, Nightline, and 20/20, CNN, and National Public Radio, and inUSA Today, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune.

Nathan works closely with MFA’s diverse group of members, supporters, and employees to develop and fulfill objectives within the organization’s four areas of focus: education, legal advocacy, corporate outreach, and undercover investigations.

Nathan has worked alongside elected officials, corporate executives, heads of international organizations, academics, farmers, celebrities, and film producers to pass landmark farmed animal protection legislation, raise public awareness about vegetarianism, and implement animal welfare policy changes.

VegNews magazine has recognized both MFA and Nathan for making substantial contributions to the vegetarian movement, naming Nathan one of the “25 Most Fascinating Vegetarians” and one of the country’s “Top 20 Activists Under 30 Years Old,” and twice naming MFA “Non-Profit of the Year.” In 2009, at the age of twenty-five, Nathan became the youngest person ever inducted into the US Animal Rights Hall of Fame.

Together we are showing the world what it means to respect all life.

Renee King-Sonnen – Rowdy Girl Sanctuary

Renee, a native Houstonian, is the Executive Director and Founder of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary in Angleton, Texas.  She remarried her husband Tommy Sonnen, a multi-generational cattle rancher in 2009 and moved to the ranch. She fell in love with farm animals, having no idea her life was about to transform. After witnessing time and again the baby calves going to the sale barn she became extremely depressed. In October 2014, she went vegan as a result and began researching factory farming and the compassionate alternative, farm sanctuaries. She desperately consulted with leaders in the vegan movement, determined to do whatever she could to create sanctuary out of what was once a beef cattle operation in the heart of cattle country. As a result, the Ranchers Advocacy Program was developed as a way to transform farms and ranches into viable, compassionate, and productive farm enterprises without animal cruelty.

He is a 54-year-old vegan athlete (#veganhockeyplayer) who trains and competes with elite players more than 30 years younger, an average of six inches taller and 60-100 pounds heavier than him. Fitness is his super power. The athletes he trains with and competes against struggle to keep up with the vegan powerhouse. Whether on the ice, bike or in the gym, his training partners have always been elites, pros and Olympians because his energy, enthusiasm, heart and hustle enable him to push them to the limit. His passionate pursuit of greatness is plant powered and age does not define him.

“Rarely can I be the most-skilled player on the ice, but I can be the fittest. Seba Johnson – Olympian/Activist

Olympic Athlete/Animal Advocate

Life of a Vegan Since Birth and History-making Olympian

http://www.sebajohnson.com

– 1:30 PM to 1:40 PM

Seba Johnson, a vegan since birth, was only 14 when she competed in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, making her an Olympic legend as both the Youngest Alpine Skier in History as well as the First Black Female Alpine Ski Racer in history.  Four years later, Seba participated in the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France.

As an animal rights activist, and a vegan since birth, Seba declined to compete in the following Winter Olympic Games.  She qualified for the 1994 Games to be held in Lillehammer, Norway but decided to boycott because Norway had resumed the practice of commercial hunting for minke whale. Always an advocate for animals, she was once disqualified from a World Cup event for her ethical objection to wearing a ski suit that had a leather patch sewn into it.

28 years after making history, Seba educates youth about health and animal/human welfare and gives presentations nationally and internationally at VegFests, animal rights conferences, universities, social justice seminars, and public schools about her activism during and since making history.  Seba is a graduate of Howard University, a member of Delta Sigma Theta, a Screen Actors Guild member, is in the process of writing her book of memoirs – for which she is looking for a publisher, and this year’s VegFest LA happens to be on May 1st – her Birthday!

“We must connect to a moral and ethical regard for each human and nonhuman animal until oppression is completely eradicated.”
