BIO
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1977, John grew up in St. Louis, MO. At a young age of 13 John found himself at 315 pounds, but through hard work and dedication he lost the weight and excelled in football and basketball. He continued his streak of athletic excellence throughout his high school and college years in Mc Cluer Senior High in the heart of Ferguson, Mo. and Harris-Stowe State College respectively. Graduating with a Bachelors degree in marketing, he later went on to pursue his MBA from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. John’s education in business coupled with his love for health and fitness gave him the ability to start his venture – Bad Ass Vegan – a health and nutrition company that strives to educate individuals on plant based nutrition. John’s love for his community brought forth the brainchild of “VeganSmart”, a plant based protein shake company with a foundation whose mission is to prevent obesity through education, physical activity and plant based nutrition. He is really excited about his upcoming documentary “Hungry For Justice” in which he is teaming up with Keegan Kuhn… maker of Cowspiracy and What The Health which focused on the negative impacts of raising animals for food on the environment and people’s health. The goal with their new documentary film is to speak about food injustice through the lens of Hip Hop.MORE INFO!

Bianca Taylor – Fitness coach and Social media influencer

Vegan for the animals, & the booty gains

Vegan Fitness Q&A

http://www.biancataylorfitness.com

Vegspiration Tent – 4:15 PM to 5:05 PM

My name is Bianca Taylor, and I am a certified personal trainer, also certified in plant-based nutrition. I went vegan in 2014, after competing in back to back bikini bodybuilding competitions and struggling with anorexia.
Growing up I was a competitive dancer and often struggled with my body image. I’ve always had a curvy structure and would feel insecure about my body because of the constant push from the media to be thin. I wad self-conscious about my hips and thighs and lack of abdominal muscles.
When I was 19 I decided to start weightlifting and eating healthier. My first trainer put me on a basic “chicken and broccoli” style diet and showed me my way around the weight room. I still wasn’t getting the results I desired, so I decided to prep for a bikini competition. I thought the strict structure and timeline would push me to take my body to the next level. I ended up on a low-carb diet for months, all through my bikini competition prep. After weeks of low carb dieting, I would compete in my bikini competition with a super low body fat percentage. As soon as I would step off stage, I would binge on fast food, sweets, and everything that I had restricted myself from for weeks. The binge would physically make me sick and next day I would feel extremely guilty and go back to my very strict low-carb diet, that left me hungry, unhappy, and unenergized. This unhealthy cycle of starve and binge became routine for me and warped my concept of food more and more. My weight fluctuated throughout the bikini prep seasons, and I didn’t have any idea how to have a healthy and fit lifestyle that I could maintain year round.
I thought that the only way to be lean and fit was to eliminate carbs, since that is what the diet and fitness industry advertises.
After competing in my last bikini competition, I fell into a deep depression and struggled to have any type of normal relationship with food. I was down to nearly 100 lbs, where as my normal weight was around 125-130 lbs. I had lost a lot of muscle mass that I had worked so hard for. I was terrified of carbs and fats, and stuck to eating a minuscule amount of chicken and veggies.
One day while cooking chicken, I looked down at my puppy and had a realization that changed my life. I suddenly lost my appetite and began researching a plant-based diet. I was shocked by all of the information I can across about the agriculture industry. I went vegan that day and decided to dive into learning about plant-based nutrition. I learned that carbs weren’t the enemy, and that you can have a delicious and flexible lifestyle while working towards your goals.
I studied plant-based nutrition via eCornell alongside personal training from ISSA, so that I could help other people who wanted to have a healthy, vegan lifestyle and get fit. Over the past few years, I had trained with and alongside Olympians and professional bodybuilders, professional mixed martial artists, and other specialists that have also taught various train methods.
Since going vegan, I have gained much muscle and healed my relationship with food. I no longer stress over carbs but rather utilize them to fuel workouts. I spend my energy helping others and promoting something I am so passionate about. I never thought that plant-based diet would allow me to overcome anorexia, but it did. It’s made me stronger and healthier than ever, and taught me REAL nutrition.
I did have to unlearn what I thought I knew about dieting for fitness, but 4 years later, I can gladly say it has been the best decision of my life.

Breaking Olympic Age Barriers by Going Vegan

Having made history on the Olympic stage as a badass cyclist, silver medal-winner Dotsie Bausch has taken the next step to confirm that she’s also a badass off the bike. Furthering the message of her powerful and persuasive TedEx Talk, “Olympic Level Compassion,” that led to her selection as one of “The 20 Badass Veg Women Who Are Making History” by ChooseVeg, Bausch launched her non-profit animal protection organization, Compassion Champs, in March of 2017. Never one to shy away from facing staggering odds – just like she did in the 2012 London Games while riding for Team USA, whose unlikely and triumphant story is chronicled in the Netflix documentary “Personal Gold” – her outfit’s latest initiative is the disruption of the dairy milk industry through an Olympic athlete-driven social campaign called Switch 4 Good. The inaugural Switch 4 Good commercial aired on NBC during the 2018 Olympic Winter Games closing ceremonies and also on ABC during the Academy Award’s broadcast. View the commercial at www.Switch4Good.org.
A former world record holder, eight-time U.S. National Champion on the road and track, and a cycling color commentator on television, Bausch was compelled to adopt a compassionate plant-based lifestyle after seeing an exposé about the routine cruelty of factory farming. She trained for and competed in the Olympics on a plant-based diet. Now retired from professional cycling and armed with a degree in Plant Based Nutrition from eCornell University, she speaks passionately around the world as the voice of farm animals, spreading her message about the numerous benefits – humane, nutritional and environmental – of plant-based eating as a lifestyle choice for athletes and non-athletes alike.

Living the Farm Sanctuary Life

http://www.farmsanctuary.org/living

– 3:30 PM to 3:45 PM

Vegspiration Tent – 2:15 PM to 3:10 PM

Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. Since the mid-1980s, he has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our system of cheap food production.
A pioneer in the field of undercover investigations, Gene has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting the deplorable conditions that exist. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals.
Gene has also testified in courts and before local, state, and federal legislative bodies, advocating for better conditions for farm animals. His most important achievements include winning the first-ever cruelty conviction at a U.S. stockyard and introducing the first U.S. laws to prohibit cruel farming confinement methods in Florida, Arizona, and California. His efforts have been covered by top news organizations, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, andThe Wall Street Journal. Gene has published two bestsellers, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food (Scribner, 2008) and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life (Rodale, 2015), which he co-authored with Forks Over Knives author Gene Stone. Through his writing and his international speaking engagements, Gene provides simple actionable solutions coupled with a compassion-first approach to help us be the change we wish to see in treatment toward animals and in our food system.
Gene began his activist career selling veggie hotdogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts to fund farm animal rescues. Today, he serves as president of Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, with shelters in New York and California. Providing rescue, refuge, and adoption for hundreds of farm animals each year, Farm Sanctuary shelters enable visitors to connect with farm animals as emotional, intelligent individuals. Gene believes these animals stand as ambassadors for the billions of factory farm animals who have no voice, and he has dedicated his career to advocating on their behalf.
Gene holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Northridge, and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University. In 2015, Gene was granted an Associate appointment in Health, Behavior, and Society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In this prestigious position, Gene is focused on implementing courses related to evidence-based work on diet and farming as it aligns to Farm Sanctuary’s goals of shedding light on factory farming’s threat to public health, the environment and animal welfare.

Ingrid Newkirk – PETA president and co-founder

We are all animals

We are all animals!

https://www.peta.org/

Vegspiration Tent – 2:15 PM to 3:10 PM

PETA president and cofounder Ingrid Newkirk has led the world’s largest animal rights organization for more than 35 years. Her passion and dedication to making this world a better place for all living beings has inspired countless others to do what they can to help animals.
As PETA’s president, Ingrid has spoken internationally on animal rights issues—from the steps of the Canadian Parliament to the streets of New Delhi, India, and from the drowning tanks of Taiwan to the halls of the U.S. Congress.
Ingrid was born in Surrey, England, and lived in Europe until she was 7 years old, when she and her parents moved to New Delhi, where her father worked as a navigational engineer and her mother volunteered for Mother Teresa and various charities. Ingrid’s early volunteer experiences—packing pills and rolling bandages for people who were suffering from leprosy, stuffing toys for orphans, and feeding stray animals—informed her view that anyone in need, including animals, is worthy of concern.
Until she was 21, Ingrid had given no thought to animal rights or even vegetarianism. In 1970, however, when she and her husband were living in Maryland and she was studying to become a stockbroker, a neighbor abandoned some kittens and Ingrid decided to take them to an animal shelter. This was a life changing-experience for Ingrid and led to her first job working in behalf of animals—cleaning kennels and investigating cruelty cases. Peter Singer’s book Animal Liberation and Ingrid’s experiences in that job and later on—including finding a fox and a squirrel caught in steel traps, finding a pig left to starve on a farm, and inspecting laboratories and circus acts for the government—made her realize that there needed to be an organization like PETA.
Ingrid has also served as a deputy sheriff, a Maryland state law enforcement officer with the highest success rate in convicting animal abusers, the director of cruelty investigations for the second-oldest humane society in the U.S., and the chief of animal disease control for the Commission on Public Health in Washington, D.C.
Under Ingrid’s leadership, legislation was passed to create the first-ever spay-and-neuter clinic in Washington, D.C. She coordinated the first arrest in U.S. history of a laboratory animal experimenter on cruelty charges and helped achieve the first anti-cruelty law in Taiwan. She spearheaded the closure of a Department of Defense underground “wound laboratory,” and she has initiated many other campaigns against animal abuse, including ending General Motors’ car-crash tests on animals.
Since it was founded, PETA has exposed horrific animal abuse in laboratories, leading to many firsts, including canceled funding, closed facilities, seizure of animals, and charges filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PETA has also closed the largest horse-slaughter operation in North America, convinced dozens of major designers and hundreds of companies to stop using fur, ended all car-crash tests on animals, cleaned up wretched animal pounds, helped schools switch to alternatives to dissection, and provided millions of people with information on vegetarianism, companion animal care, and countless other issues.
Ingrid Newkirk’s biography shows that she is an abolitionist who remains committed to the idea that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.

egan Recruitment Strategies

Vegspiration Tent – 5:10 PM to 6:00 PM

Jayde Nicole is a vegan, environmentalist and animal activist.
Jayde seeks to educate people on the seriousness of protecting our environment, our oceans and the animals we share this planet with. She participates in and organizes beach & ocean clean ups, volunteers at the marine mammal care center, and educates people on how to reduce their impact on our environment through social media.
Jayde created her dog rescue, EDL Foundation in 2013 but her love of all animals has been with her for her entire life. At the age of five she informed her mother in a way only a five year old can do, that she would no longer be eating meat, and so began her path to help as many animals as she could. Her move from small-town Port Perry, Ontario to Los Angeles, California, which is overwhelmed with dog shelters, helped to focus her efforts towards helping dogs. EDL seeks to educate people on pet population control, animal adoption, and proper care. They rescue dogs abandoned and neglected at kill shelters as well as homeless and displaced  pets. EDL rehabilitates these dogs and then helps find them their forever homes.

Vajra is a self-taught visionary artist from Southern California. Vegan since the age of 16, he credits this decision as the greatest choice he ever made. Drawing inspiration from across cultures, space and time, Vajra’s art is a synthesis of timeless knowledge, contemporary aesthetics and his own unique vision. Since he was a child, Vajra was mesmerized by the dazzling beauty and complexity of life in all its forms and equally distraught by its destruction. It is this fierce love that motivates him as an artist – his brush is moved by the joy and sorrow of our planet. He creates art for the betterment of all beings, that we may better understand ourselves, each other, and how we can work together to create the world we’ve always known was possible. He invites you to his website Altaroftheheart.com where he shares the stories behind his paintings. May his art find a home at the altar of your heart.MORE INFO!
